Ceiling Fan Buyers Guide: How to Choose the Best Ceiling Fan Material?

Selecting the best ceiling fan for your home can be a tricky process. A great place to start is finding exactly what type of material your ceiling fan should be made from! We’ve put together a ceiling fan buying guide to explain exactly what materials are available on the ceiling fan market and exactly what ceiling fan material will be best for your needs.

ABS Plastic:

ABS plastic is without a doubt the most versatile material on the market for ceiling fans, it is lightweight, durable and affordable! ABS stands for Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene and is a fairly new material in the ceiling fan industry. It is an impact-resistance engineering thermoplastic which has excellent durability and versatility. Most ceiling fans constructed from ABS material are suitable for both indoor and outdoor uses due to the rust-resistant features of the plastic. ABS is so good we even have a whole blog dedicated to it! Check it out here for more information on ABS ceiling fan material.

316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel:

Before ABS plastics, a 316 marine grade stainless Steel was the go-to material for ceiling fans in outdoor and coastal areas. Boasting anti-corrosive priorities, 316 marine grade stainless steel material has been used in a wide range of products and applications (even the kitchen sink!). A great ceiling fan constructed from 316SS material is the Typhoon Ceiling fan from Hunter Pacific, you can view this ceiling fan here.

Aluminium is another common ceiling fan material, it’s known for being durable and affordable. Aluminium is perfect for those who need to keep costs down! Most aluminium ceiling fans utilise the aluminium in the motor and use a plywood blade, making these fans the most cost-effective. The downside to plywood blades is that blades can chip, have the paint peel and sag over time. Some ceiling fans, like the Airborne Ascot, overcome this by using ABS blades instead!

CFD Tip:

Look at where the fan is going to be used, are you putting your ceiling fan indoors or outdoors? Are you located near the coastline or hinterland? Finding the best type of material for your ceiling fan is heavily dependent on where your ceiling fan will be installed. For example, if you’re close to the coastline or hinterland where moisture in the air is higher than ABS plastic will be the best material for you. It’s cheap, rust-resistant and affordable! Whereas aluminium ceiling fans are more suited to dryer environments.
